If your friends first I can tell you from experience that it makes a really good relationship, you alread know each other really well, you know what they are into, you dont have to be embarrassed about telling them all baggage because they probably already know it. It can be a bit awkward making the transition, but not overly, not if you both like each other more than friends, if the awkwardness out weighs the attraction then its not meant to be.
